Youth positive development: An exploratory study carried out with Portuguese students

Jorge Luís Esperança, Cláudia Dias, Robert John Brustad, António Manuel Fonseca

Abstract

The objective of this study was to understand how Portuguese young people are located in relation to some parameters that have been associated with young people’s positive development. For this purpose, the model of the 5C’s was considered (Lerner et al., 2005), in particular regarding to its evaluation proposal. Nine hundred and seven Portuguese students of both genders and between the ages of 12 and 15 completed PYDp/red (Esperança, Dias, Brustad, & Fonseca, 2017; the Portuguese version of the Measure of PYD). The results showed that young people had higher results in self-concept issues and a positive view of their own actions, showing lower values in respect of social rules and correct patterns of behaviour girls and boys, but there were only statistically significant differences in the character dimension. As far as age was concerned, there were relevant different results, with the results being lower, in all dimensions, in the young people who were at the end of puberty in comparison with other age groups.
